Fairfield Inn Amesbury

I don’t usually stay at Fairfield Inns, but this one had really nice rooms. The beds were super comfortable and the furnishings were nice, especially the shelving in the bathroom area. Breakfast was really good with extra food items not typically seen at other hotel chains. Lots of renovations going on downstairs will make this a great place really soon!

This visit started off really badly even before it began. After booking in March, I received an email 3 days prior to arrival, letting me know that they were "finishing" their renovations. There was no indication at the time of booking that any renovation was going on. If there were, I would have booked elsewhere. I responded to that email and asked why there was no prior notice given - and to no surprise, I received no response. Well, there was no front door, no lobby, and a temporary entrance in the back of the building, surrounded by dumpsters and construction trailers. Not the most aesthetic experience, but whatever. (Mind you, all the parking is, logically, in FRONT of the building). We checked in, and the front desk person said "we have no lobby, but all our rooms are completely renovated." I thought, cool, I don't sleep in the lobby anyway. We entered what I thought was a reasonably clean room, but that changed once I looked deeper. It was about 50 degrees in the room so I quickly turned up the AC. I went to set up the iron, and when I moved the iron, there was about 10 years of dust surrounding it in it's location. I picked up the ironing board, and it literally disintegrated in my hands. The escutcheon around the showerhead was not attached to the wall, and loaded with rust and crud. The escutcheon on the safety rail in the shower was also not attached, revealing that the safety rail was also only connected to the wall with ONE screw, leaving two holes empty - and the screws weren't just missing - they were never installed, as there was no hole in the tile - can't wait until someone who NEEDS this rail tries to use it. The showerhead was clogged with years of scale and rust, causing the water to dribble out in every direction except at your body. The refillable shower amenity pumps were also empty. There were various spots of mold and grossness scattered around the bathroom too. When I left for the evening, I mentioned these items to the front desk. I returned to the room in the exact same condition. That evening in bed, the room was dreadfully warm. I set the AC back down to 70, nothing happened. I turned it down to 65, nothing happened. Apparently because it was set so low before my arrival, it was frozen. So no AC on the first night! I did go on the app and request that the shower amenities be refilled, and those were filled the next day.... but nothing else was touched. When I checked in, I was asked if I wanted daily housekeeping service. I said "yes" and did not receive any. When I inquired the next day, I was told "housekeeping is only on request." I said I did request it, and then I was promptly told "oh, it's only every two days." I'm fine with that, but was not informed, and as such, had tossed all our towels on the floor. I asked if I could get new towels, and was told yes, and that was done while I was out. So someone went to my room, but still ignored ALL the other things I reported. DAy 2, t

We enjoyed our stay and it was close to the parks we visited. The rooms were clean and comfy and breakfast and parking were included which is great for those of us on a budget. We also appreciate a microwave in the room. We wish there were more fruit options at breakfast but most hotels have limited options. We would definitely stay again when in the area.

We’d rate this a negative 10 if possible. We stayed here for 4 nights for a wedding at well over $200 per night and only got room service once because we begged for it . Upon check in no one was available and after 10 minutes a man emerged from the dark breakfast area eating toast . He knew we were there and ignored us . We saw bags of garbage and pizza boxes in the hallway where are room was upon arrival and wondered why. They stayed their for 3 days , which was a hazard for vermin . There is no pick up of garbage daily there we learned later. The room was ok , but the place is beat up . The following evening after being out all day the room was not made up , nor was garbage taken out. We went to the front desk and the man there said it was Covid policy to freshen the room every other day and that we should have been told that at check in . We weren’t. We asked for full service for the remainder of our stay . He said he’d put it in the computer and agreed with us . Another employee there told us the new housekeepers were good , the old ones put do nor disturb signs on the doors and never cleaned rooms . The next day , Again , we got no service . The woman at the desk for the next 2 days was outright rude to us . She said oh I know about you … like we were bad schoolchildren. She then said she had 130 rooms and 3 housekeepers and we should be understanding . If we were at a shelter or cheap hotel we’d understand , but this was prepaid and nearly $1000 . We don’t mind reusing towels or not having the bed changed every day but no service at all ? Ridiculous . We had to empty our own trash . We asked if that meant we would not get service that day . She said I didn’t say that , maybe you will , maybe you won’t . Opposite the desk is a Marriott Fairfield promise of treating guests like family . What a joke !

It’s clear that this hotel is understaffed but it was a bummer to receive such short and cold service from front desk, consistently. When I had questions they were incredibly unhelpful, not meeting eye contact or mumbling answers; when I checked in there was not a greeting; when I asked for bed service none came. One day, a staff member even entered my hotel room without knocking or announcing themselves. A housekeeper was the only person throughout my stay who was warm and conversational. The room itself was simple and comfortable but the towels really smelt moldy (hence why I had asked for service). I stayed here for a wedding and if I returned to this area would likely stay at the other hotel in town.

Friday + Saturday night stay in July 2023 with family of 4 with adult children. Discovered surprise construction for entire building when arrived. Windows covered with plastic sheeting. Pool closed due to overchlorination. Construction noise started at 8:30 on Sunday morning. Ran until 7PM on Saturday night. When I went back to my car to get my luggage and came back to my room the door was wedged open and there were three men in it supposedly "fixing" 2 channels on the new TV. One was manager who excitedly talked about the new TV (not important to me - so big that it blocked a light), and didn't seem to get that it wasn't okay to just be in a guest's room. Room was very heavily perfumed upon arrival...needed to have manager let outside air in because the windows were blocked...he pushed the corner of the screen off and removed one small corner of the construction sheeting to do so. Hallway smelled like a burnt out motor (maybe the ice machine). Long waits for overcrowded elevator always. Needed to go up to go down from the 2nd floor at times. Tried to use stairs as alternate, but need to go around building outside because couldn't get on to main floor via stairs sometimes even with room key. Room was nicely furnished and clean. Breakfast had good options. Wifi worked well. Convenient location just off highway. Water available in lobby. Ample parking. Woman at front desk friendly. (but maybe don't require her to ask "How was your stay" during surprise construction.) This hotel will be a nice place to stay when there is no construction, but having the building under construction to this extent (no window light!) without warning is bait and switch. When your construction timing runs late (generous assumption?), there should be some sort of compensation to guests. I felt bad for the bride and groom who had their whole family stay there.

Though quiet, room, lobby and elevator cleanliness left a lot to be desired. Carpet and tiles were filthy and sticky. Ants and some big flying bugs were evident everywhere. Thankfully quiet though the walls are very thin and before ten and after 9 could hear people chastising kids in room, etc.

We stayed here for a few days in late May as we were in town for a wedding. The room was excellent, bed was comfy and bathroom worked fine. We slept quite well here. Breakfast was yummy, seemed better than at most similar hotels. People working here were friendly and the whole place felt safe.
